It's Wednesday! Which means it's author spotlight time!!
Let's welcome our next author: Ember Davis.
How long have you been writing?
I started writing at a young age, but life got in the way of writing and reading for me. Kids, jobs and just…stuff. I found my love for reading again a few years ago and discovered a whole world of indie authors that I had no idea existed. That’s what got me back into writing. Not only because I had some stories to tell, but because becoming a writer outside of saved files on my computer felt achievable. I published my first book in March 2020.
What made you want to become a writer?
At first it was a way for me to process my own experiences, but it evolved into a means for me to express parts of myself that I didn’t have another outlet for. That’s what ultimately lead me to write instalove contemporary romance.
Tell me about your current work-in-progress.
Well, I have a few going right now. I have a reader magnet novella that is the farthest along. It’s centered around a wrong number text.
I’ve also started a full-length novel that will be part of a series, at its core is the idea of wanderlust and the heroines never feeling centered or at home where you are and the pull to go and experience other places and people. Of course, it won’t all go according to plan and instead of seeing everything that they set out to, they’ll find what they’re looking for, just not where they thought they would.
Neither of those WIPs are what I had planned to write for my January release, so we’ll see how it all pans out.
What is your writing process like?
I would love to say that I plot extensively and know what each chapter will look like, but that would be a total lie. I look at my plots like a fence, I know where the fence posts are, but I don’t always know what the fence looks like between them. Could be white picket, could be cedar, could be chain link.
Knowing where my characters are going is enough for me to sit down and get started, from there I let my characters lead me through their story. I’ve introduced characters I didn’t even know existed and I’ve taken out plot points I was so sure would be in there but weren’t true to my characters.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a pediatric emergency room physician.
That did not pan out.
How many unfinished works do you have right now?
Only four; that’s not too bad. Right?
What advice do you have for other writers?
Just do it. Take the leap. Have the faith. All those inspirational poster sayings. Seriously though, there’s only one way to find out if people will like your work and that is to put it out there. Don’t apologize for your characters, your style, your word choices or anything else. Be true to your characters and always keep in mind that there are millions of readers out there, so your book has a place out there and readers who will love it.
What inspires your ideas?
It depends. The first book I published, On Stage, was built around a dream that I had. It was just one scene of the hero (who looked a lot like Jackson’s character in Teen Wolf, which is why I named him Jackson) who chased the heroine down to the quad because she left his room without waking him up and saying goodbye. Usually I don’t remember my dreams, but this one stuck with me and the more I tried to ignore it, the more it got under my skin. So, I set out to write a book where I could make that scene into a reality.
Most of my other ideas come from what I want as a reader. I love tattoo artist romance, so I wrote a series. I love protector and rock star romances, so I connected them with the tattoo artists and created a family group and a world for them to exist within. I also noticed that while cannabis use is legalized throughout various states, that there is a lack of that in romance books. Normally anyone who smokes cannabis are “bad” or reprobates. I wanted to show a different side where those who smoke cannabis are contributing members of society with families, businesses, goals and responsibilities that they take very seriously. So, I incorporated that idea into my tattoo artist, protector (though my protectors are mostly sober) and rock star series.
Unexpected Love (Sweetwater Valley Book 1) was inspired by things I’m dealing with in my own life and was a way for me to see the possibility of a future that is different from my present in respect to love.
Ultimately, how those ideas come to fruition is completely at the whim of my characters.
What is a typical day in your home life?
I have 2 kids, ages 9 and 4, and we are distance learning this year. My day starts with making sure my third grader is doing the work he needs to do and then coaxing my pre-ker to watch her morning video, do worksheets and participate in her small group video conference.
Sometimes after that I can get some writing in. Sometimes I do things to keep up with the house, like laundry. (Boo! Hiss!)
My significant other gets out of bed some time in there.
Then I try and get more writing in, hopefully the voices in my head are louder than the ones in my home.
I cook dinner, I do the bedtime stuff. Bath time for my 4-year-old means reading time for me.
Once they’re in bed, then I can get some more writing done, make teasers and other graphics, or make book covers for books I may never write and don’t really have a concept for.
What’s the most difficult thing about writing (for you)?
Pushing through the crushing self-doubt. It happens at least once a book where I have no idea what I’m doing or why I’m doing it and I wonder if anyone actually cares about my characters at all.
How many hours a day do you spend writing?
I probably get in at least 4 hours of actual writing on average.
Tell us about your most recent release.

Claiming His Family (Higgins Security Book 2)
Release date: 12.23.20

This is the story of Ryder and Chloe and is part of the Denver Family world where my Banks Ink. and Suburban Outcasts series also exist. I’ve been setting up Chloe and Ryder to get together almost from the very beginning. Ryder is a former Ranger and built like a tank. Chloe is very sheltered because she was raised in a religious cult and doesn’t like to draw attention to herself. She needs a protector and Ryder has been waiting for two years for her to be ready, but he knew from the moment he saw her that he’d be claiming her.
If you had to pick just ONE of your books to be put into a hall of fame – which one would it be and why?
Ack! What a hard question. I think I would have to pick Unexpected Love (Sweetwater Valley Book 1) because it is close to my heart. It’s my own personal ‘what if’ story. Lark and I are very similar and when you meet May, Lark’s mom, you’re meeting my mom. When you meet the kids, you’re meeting my kids. Unexpected Love is a BWWM story and I got to touch on some racially motivated experiences I’ve had in my own life. It was important to me, being biracial, that I approach those issues from a real place while also being mindful that not everyone will have an understanding about where I’m coming from.
What’s your favorite ice cream?
To eat: chocolate chip cookie dough
To have blended into a delicious milkshake: peanut butter and chocolate.
So, yeah. That’s me. I guess. I like my heroes to be big alphas with gooey centers and my heroines to be sassy and smart. I’m still learning as I go, but I’m really proud of what I’ve accomplished and so grateful to every reader who has given my books a chance. All I hoped for when I hit publish that first time was to have one person read and enjoy my book, but I superseded that which leaves me speechless sometimes. I’m floored every time a reader reaches out to me, comments on a post or in a take-over and lets me know who much they love my books; it’s so much more than I let myself hope for when I was trying to decide whether to give self-publishing a shot.
