NaNoWriMo is officially here! I've already warned my friends and family that I will not be reachable for most of this month. The exceptions are, of course, my daughter, siblings, and boyfriend.
What is NaNo? NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It's a writing challenge that millions of writers participate in every year. The goal? Write 50k words in 30 days. Sounds fairly simple, right? It's not! Breaking down the word count - each day you need to write 1,667 words. Having a bad day and didn't write anything? Sick and couldn't get out of bed? Family emergency? The words from that day(s) now spill over onto another day and your new goal can reach over 3k that day. See the struggle?
Thankful for my writing drive; today is Day 6 and I've managed over 15k words so far. My average daily goal has been right around 2k each day, but I've had days of over 5k.

This right here will show you the progress I've made so far. The blue line in the graph up top is the daily wordcount goal and how many I need to write each day to hit the 50k word goal by the 30th of November. The graph at the bottom is the daily wordcount goal that I've completed (obviously didn't do anything yet today. It's been a little busy!)
Want to give it a shot? Go for it! It's completely free and you don't have to be a professional to participate. You can create your account, start a topic, and simply see what you can do as far as being a writer for a month. Put yourself in our shoes and see how difficult it really is to write a novel.
Sign up here if you're interested in joining the challenge >> www.NaNoWriMo.org
You can have buddies, keep tabs on each other, update your daily wordcount.. you never know; you may actually enjoy it and become an author.
So - for those that have writer friends and you're annoyed that you aren't hearing from them as much as you normally do - this is the month we have all been training for. This annual challenge is what we dread, yet anticipate every November. Cut your friends some slack and know that it's no walk-in-the-park kind of activity. Before you complain - sign up and give it a try. What do you have to lose?
According to my graph up above, I need to jump off of here and jump over to my novel. Join us!
Until next time,
-Alyssa Lynn
